Utilita is one of the few suppliers with high street stores, called Energy Hubs, where you can speak to staff and top up your credit. You can even top up at an Energy Hub if you are with another supplier. Locations are listed on Utilita’s website.

Utilita was founded in 2003 and was built specifically around prepayment energy, rather than treating it as an add-on to a wider range of services. This focus sets it apart from most suppliers, and it serves around 800,000 households across Great Britain. Because prepayment customers are often among the most vulnerable, Utilita puts particular emphasis on support and on tools that help people avoid running out of supply.

In late 2025, Utilita sold around 40,000 of its credit customers to EDF, a move approved by Ofgem. This affected credit accounts only, not prepayment customers, and was part of Utilita’s strategy to concentrate on its core Smart Pay As You Go business. Customers involved in the transfer saw no interruption to their supply, and their prices and balances were protected during the changeover.

Utilita also performed well in Uswitch’s 2025 Energy Awards, taking runner-up positions in the Overall Customer Satisfaction, Best Value for Money and Best Customer Service categories.

Utilita tariffs

Utilita keeps things simple with a single tariff, Smart Energy, available as dual fuel, electricity only or gas only. It is a variable, multi-rate pay as you go tariff, so its unit rates follow the prepayment price cap rather than being fixed.

To get the most from Utilita, you will want a smart meter, which the supplier fits free of charge, though there may be a wait for an appointment. Its My Utilita app lets you top up, track usage, move credit between meters and get support.

Prepayment support features

Utilita’s standout features are designed around the needs of prepayment customers.

No standing charge
Unlike most suppliers, Utilita does not charge a daily standing charge, so if you use no energy, you pay nothing. Any infrastructure costs are built into the unit rates instead.
A two-rate saver
Once you have spent a set amount on energy in a day, a cheaper saver rate applies for the rest of that day, rewarding steady usage.
No exit fees
All Utilita tariffs are variable with no exit fees, so you are free to switch away at any time.

Utilita’s support goes further for customers who are struggling. That includes £15 of emergency credit if you are unable to top up, and friendly credit hours, typically overnight and at weekends, during which your supply will not be cut off even if you run low.

Through the My Utilita app, the POWER UP feature lets eligible customers take a short-term top up of up to £60 for gas and £40 for electricity when they have run out, and pay it back at a manageable rate. Utilita is also part of the ECO scheme, which can help eligible customers get money off energy efficiency improvements such as boilers, and it runs sessions and campaigns aimed at helping people save energy.

Is Utilita right for you?

Utilita is likely to suit you if you have a prepayment meter and want a supplier that specialises in pay as you go, with strong support tools and no daily standing charge. Its app, Energy Hubs and emergency and friendly credit features are built around making prepayment less stressful.

It is less likely to suit you if you want a credit account, a fixed tariff or a supplier with strong green credentials, as these are not its focus. As always, compare against your usage and circumstances before you decide.
