Octopus Energy was founded in August 2015 by Greg Jackson, James Eddison and Chris Hulatt, with backing from the British asset management firm Octopus Group. It built its business around technology from the ground up.

It has grown quickly since, in large part by taking on customers from suppliers that left the market or went into administration. It absorbed Bulb’s 1.5 million customers when Bulb went into administration, and later acquired Shell Energy’s customer base when Shell exited the UK retail energy market. Octopus is now the largest energy supplier in the UK, and has expanded internationally, with operations as far afield as Texas.

Octopus Energy tariffs

Octopus Energy has one of the widest tariff ranges of any UK supplier, covering domestic, business, credit and prepayment options. Here is a summary of the main types.

Fixed Tariffs
Lock in your unit rate and standing charge for a set term, typically 12 months. This protects you from price rises during that period.
Variable Tariffs
Rates move up and down in line with the Ofgem energy price cap or wholesale price shifts. There is no fixed term.
Tracker Tariff
Follows the daily wholesale price of energy, so your rate changes each day.

Agile Octopus
Goes a step further than the Tracker tariff, with rates that change every half hour based on wholesale prices. Suits households able to shift usage away from peak times.
Octopus Go and Intelligent Octopus Go
Designed for households with an electric vehicle, offering cheaper overnight electricity. Intelligent Octopus Go adds smart charging control, automatically shifting your charging to the cheapest times. You will need a compatible SMETS2 smart meter, and in some cases a compatible charger or vehicle.
Octopus does not tend to charge exit fees on its domestic tariffs, though exit fees do apply to business tariffs. It is worth checking the terms of your specific tariff before you sign up. Compare energy tariffs now on Simply Switch.

How green is Octopus Energy?

All Octopus electricity tariffs are backed by 100% renewable energy, generated from sources including wind and solar. Octopus generates some of its own renewable energy and buys the rest from other generators.

Customers can also pay a small monthly amount to offset the carbon emissions from their gas use.

Other Octopus products and services

Beyond energy supply, Octopus offers heat pumps, solar panels, storage batteries and EV charging products.

Smart meters are available, with installation appointments released weekly across the country. Customers can register their interest and be notified when appointments open in their area.

An app and online account let you submit meter readings, view usage and statements, make payments, adjust your Direct Debit and book a smart meter installation.
