British Gas traces its roots back to 1812, when it was founded as The Gas Light and Coke Company, the world’s first public gas utility. Today it is owned by Centrica, a British energy and services company, and operates across the UK and Ireland.

As well as gas and electricity, British Gas offers smart meters, Hive smart heating thermostats, and boiler cover. The British Gas Energy Trust, set up in 2004 as an independent charity, provides grants and debt advice to households struggling with energy bills. This support is available to non-British Gas customers as well.

Prepayment meter compensation

In May 2026, Ofgem found that British Gas had wrongly installed prepayment meters in some customers’ homes between 2018 and 2021. British Gas agreed to pay up to £112 million in compensation as a result. The supplier has been given 12 months to identify and contact affected customers, who may receive compensation or have outstanding debt written off.

British Gas energy tariffs

British Gas offers several tariff types to suit different households. Here is a summary of what is currently available.

Fixed Tariffs
Lock in your unit rates for the length of your contract. Your bills will not rise if wholesale energy prices go up, but exit fees may apply if you leave early.
Variable Tariffs
Rates move up and down in line with market conditions. There is no fixed end date and no exit fees, so you can switch at any time. The Ofgem energy price cap applies to these tariffs.
Electric Vehicle Tariffs
Designed for EV owners, offering cheaper electricity rates overnight between midnight and 5am. You will need a smart meter to access this tariff.

What is PeakSave?

PeakSave is a British Gas scheme that rewards customers who shift their electricity use to off-peak times. Every Sunday between 11am and 4pm, electricity is available at half price, with the saving credited back to your account.

There are also short Green Flex events during periods of high renewable energy generation, where the same half-price rate applies. PeakSave is open to all British Gas electricity customers with a working smart meter, and sits on top of your existing tariff with no need to switch plans.
