Sainsbury’s Energy is not an energy supplier in its own right. It is a brand that partners with a licensed supplier, and today that partner is E.ON Next, which handles the actual supply, billing and customer service behind the Sainsbury’s name.

The brand first launched in 2011 through a partnership with British Gas. That arrangement ended in 2019, after which the brand partnered briefly with npower. When npower was absorbed by E.ON UK in 2021, Sainsbury’s Energy moved across to E.ON Next, where it remains today.

Sainsbury’s Energy matches the electricity its customers use with 100% renewable energy, backed by Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certificates. Because E.ON Next supplies the energy, the overall generation mix reflects E.ON Next’s own fuel sources, but customer electricity is matched with renewable certificates.

Through the E.ON Next partnership, customers can also access discounts on home energy upgrades such as solar panels, home batteries, boilers and EV chargers. Since moving to E.ON Next, the old Sainsbury’s Energy app no longer works, so customers manage their account through a web browser, where they can view usage, submit meter readings and manage Direct Debit payments. Smart meters are available to install free of charge.

Sainsbury’s Energy supports the Warm Home Discount for eligible customers, and its website signposts help for anyone struggling with bills, including affordable payment plans, free debt advice through StepChange, and the E.ON Next Energy Fund.

Sainsbury’s Energy tariffs

Sainsbury’s Energy offers a focused range of tariffs, all of which earn Nectar points. Here is a summary of what is currently available.

Fix and Reward (fixed)
The main tariff, available over a 12-month or 24-month term, as single or dual fuel. It locks in your unit rates for the length of the contract, protecting you from price cap changes. An early exit fee applies per fuel if you leave before the end of your contract.
Standard Variable
Moves up and down in line with the Ofgem energy price cap, which is reviewed every three months. There is no fixed term and no exit fee, so you can switch at any time.
Track and Reward
A tracker tariff, which follows movements in the market while typically staying below the price cap.

Sainsbury’s Energy supports both smart and traditional meters, and single-rate and multi-rate meters, so Economy 7 tariffs are supported. It does not currently offer prepayment or pay-as-you-go tariffs. Customers can sign up for electricity-only and dual fuel plans online, while gas-only plans need to be arranged through the call centre.

Nectar points and rewards

The main draw for many customers is the Nectar rewards scheme. You can earn bonus Nectar points when you sign up to an eligible tariff, and collect extra points on your Sainsbury’s shopping for as long as you stay on that tariff. Dual fuel customers can earn points at a higher rate than single fuel customers.

Sainsbury’s Energy scores 4.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot, based on over 3,100 reviews, which places it in the Excellent category. Reviews tend to praise customer service, with the occasional complaint focusing on technical issues such as Nectar points not being applied correctly.

Sainsbury’s Energy was also named a Which? Recommended Provider for energy in 2026, which reflects a strong showing in Which?’s customer survey and supplier assessment.
