OVO Energy was founded in 2009 in Bristol by Stephen Fitzpatrick, with the aim of making energy cheaper, greener and simpler. It grew from a small independent supplier into one of the UK’s largest, most significantly through its acquisition of SSE’s retail energy business in January 2020, which brought around 3.5 million household customers across to OVO.

On sustainability, OVO has shifted its approach over time. It no longer provides renewable electricity as standard across all tariffs, instead offering it as an opt-in through its Greener Electricity option, which is backed by Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certificates. OVO also offers smart home products and low-carbon technology, including solar panels, battery storage, EV chargers and heat pumps, and runs a Power Move scheme that rewards customers for shifting their electricity use away from peak times.

For customers who are struggling, OVO’s Extra Support Package, which opened in October 2025, offers financial and practical help including emergency top-ups, payment reductions, extended repayment plans and free energy-saving products.

Like several large suppliers, OVO has faced regulatory penalties in the past over billing and smart meter issues. This is worth being aware of, though it is not unusual for a supplier of its size.

OVO Energy tariffs

OVO offers a standard variable tariff alongside one and two-year fixed deals, several of which come with optional add-ons. Here is a summary of what is currently available.

Simpler Energy
OVO’s standard variable tariff. Rates rise and fall in line with the Ofgem energy price cap, which is reviewed every three months, and there are no exit fees. You may be moved onto this tariff automatically when a fixed deal ends.
1 Year Fixed
Locks in your unit rates for 12 months, protecting you from price rises during that period. It can be taken with optional add-ons, including Boiler Cover or Greener Electricity, a fully traceable 100% renewable electricity option.
2 Year Fixed
Locks in your rates for 24 months. An optional Heating Control add-on is available, which comes with a smart thermostat.

Exit fees may apply if you leave a fixed deal early, so it is worth checking the terms of your specific tariff.

OVO supports both credit and prepayment customers. Prepayment customers can top up at PayPoint, Payzone or the Post Office, and smart meter customers can also top up online, by phone or through OVO’s app. Emergency and friendly credit options are available if you are unable to top up. Smart meters are available free of charge, and OVO’s app offers tailored energy insights, saving tips and account management.

The E.ON acquisition

In May 2026, OVO agreed to sell its UK energy retail business to E.ON, in a deal that would bring OVO’s customers under the E.ON group. The sale is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to complete in the second half of 2026.

Until it does, OVO and E.ON continue to operate as separate companies, and OVO says there will be no immediate changes for customers. As part of the same announcement, OVO agreed to sell its Home Services business, which provides boiler insurance and servicing, to Hometree.

OVO Energy customer reviews

OVO Energy scores 4.7 out of 5 on Trustpilot, based on nearly 299,000 reviews, which places it in the Excellent category.

It is worth noting that independent assessments of OVO’s customer service are more mixed. In the most recent Which? customer survey, OVO received the lowest overall score of the 17 suppliers rated, with low ratings for value for money and customer service. A Citizens Advice review placed OVO more favourably, around the middle of the suppliers it assessed for service. Reading recent reviews across more than one source will give you the fullest picture before switching.

“OVO is a big supplier going through a big change, with its retail business set to move under E.ON once the deal clears. For customers, nothing changes overnight, but it is worth keeping an eye on. On service, the independent picture is mixed, so I would not switch on brand alone. Look closely at the tariff and, if green energy matters to you, remember that renewable electricity with OVO is now an opt-in rather than the default.”

Is OVO Energy right for you?

OVO may suit you if you want a large, established supplier with a strong focus on smart technology and a good range of low-carbon add-ons like solar, batteries and EV charging. Its fixed deals with Boiler Cover or Heating Control can be convenient if you want to bundle extras into one arrangement.

That said, its customer service ratings are mixed, and its renewable electricity is now an opt-in rather than standard, so it is worth weighing those points up. With the E.ON acquisition still to complete, some customers may prefer to keep an eye on how things settle. As always, compare across the market on price before you decide.
