Outfox Energy is a family-owned, British challenger supplier based in Leicester. It launched in late 2017 as Outfox the Market and rebranded to Outfox Energy in June 2025. It is the trading name of Foxglove Energy Supply Limited, and today supplies around 185,000 homes across Great Britain.

Outfox is known for competitive pricing and a simple, digital-first service, with accounts managed online or through its app. It is one of the best-rated suppliers for customer service, and currently tops the Citizens Advice league table. It does not support prepayment meters, and only installs smart meters in some parts of the country.

The company is independent and family-owned, set up by Keith and Maria Bastian, and is not part of any larger energy group. For balance, it is worth being aware that in December 2022 Ofgem temporarily stopped Outfox from taking on new customers while it reviewed the company’s finances. That restriction was lifted in June 2023, and the following month Ofgem fined Outfox £1.8 million for repeatedly failing to provide requested financial information. It has continued to supply customers throughout.

Outfox Energy tariffs

Outfox offers a small range of tariffs, all paid by Direct Debit. Here is a summary of the main options.

Fixed
Unit rates and standing charges locked for one or two years, dual fuel or electricity only. Exit fees of £75 to £100 per fuel apply if you leave early.
Standard variable
Prices move in line with the Ofgem price cap, with no exit fees, so you can switch away at any time.
Tracker
A 12-month tariff designed to stay at least 5% below the Ofgem price cap, with prices changing when the cap does. Requires dual fuel and a smart meter.
My EV
Cheaper off-peak electricity between midnight and 5.30am each day, ideal for charging an electric vehicle at home.
Smart Export Guarantee
Payments for electricity you export back to the grid from solar panels.

Outfox does not currently support prepayment meters, and it only installs smart meters in some parts of the country. If you need a prepayment meter, or a smart meter and live outside those areas, it is worth checking availability before you switch.

What is Outfox Energy’s fuel mix?

The electricity we use is generated from a mix of fuels, such as gas, nuclear and renewables like wind, water and solar. The share of each makes up a supplier’s fuel mix. Around 40% of Outfox’s electricity comes from renewable sources, backed by Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certificates. Its tariffs are not 100% renewable, and because it does not generate its own renewable power, Which? gives it a low sustainability score. If a fully green supply is a priority, it is worth comparing against a dedicated green supplier.

Outfox Energy customer reviews

Outfox Energy scores [X out of 5] on Trustpilot, based on [X reviews], and it responds to its poorer reviews to help resolve problems. Customer service is clearly its strong suit: Citizens Advice ranks Outfox 1st in its energy supplier league table, with a rating of 4.03 out of 5, an average call waiting time of just over a minute, and 100% of emails answered within two days. It also won two awards in the Small Supplier category at the 2026 Uswitch Energy Awards.

For balance, Which? is less glowing, giving Outfox a customer score of 73%, placing it joint 8th of 17 suppliers, and it is not a Which? Recommended Provider. It scored well for smart meters and help for vulnerable customers, but lower on customer service and sustainability in that survey. Reading across more than one source gives the fullest picture.

“Outfox has quietly become one of the best-rated suppliers for service, and topping the Citizens Advice table is a real achievement for a supplier this size. The tracker tariff that stays below the cap is a nice option if you are comfortable with prices that move. The things to watch are that it is not a green supplier, at around 40% renewable, and it does not do prepayment, so it will not suit everyone. As always, compare it on price against your own usage first.”

Outfox Energy could be a good fit if you want a supplier with strong customer service scores and short call waiting times, you pay by Direct Debit and are happy to manage your account online or in an app, and you like the idea of a tracker tariff that stays below the price cap.

It may not suit you if you are on a prepayment meter, want a 100% renewable tariff, or need a smart meter and live outside the areas where Outfox installs them. As always, compare prices using your own postcode and usage before switching.
