Good Energy was founded in 1999 by Juliet Davenport, with the aim of helping homes and businesses be part of the solution to climate change. It has supplied renewable energy for over 25 years and is based in Chippenham, Wiltshire, serving around 250,000 households and businesses across the UK. Juliet Davenport stepped down as chief executive in 2021 but has remained involved in the business.

In 2025, Good Energy was acquired by Esyasoft, a Dubai-headquartered smart grid technology company, in a deal that took the company into private ownership. Esyasoft has said it intends to keep Good Energy running as it does today, with the same name, team and Chippenham base, the same renewable approach, and support for recertifying as a B Corporation under the new ownership.

Good Energy is one of the few UK home energy suppliers to hold B Corp certification, reflecting its focus on ethical and environmental standards. Rather than generating all its own power, it buys electricity directly from thousands of independent renewable generators across Britain, using wind, solar, hydro and other sources, and feeds enough renewable electricity back into the grid to match what its customers use. Its gas is carbon neutral, including a share of renewable biogas, with the remaining emissions offset through supported projects. All of its tariffs have achieved Gold Standard Green accreditation under Uswitch’s scheme.

Beyond supply, Good Energy offers energy efficiency products including heat pumps (mainly in the south-west of England), solar panels and batteries through a group installer, and boiler servicing. Its app lets customers submit meter readings, view statements and pay bills.

Good Energy tariffs

Good Energy keeps its range straightforward, and every tariff is backed by 100% renewable electricity. Here is a summary of what is currently available.

Fixed Tariff
Locks in your unit rates for the length of your contract, giving you price certainty. Exit fees apply if you leave early.
Standard Variable
Moves up and down over time. Importantly, this tariff is not covered by the Ofgem price cap, which is explained in the section below.
Smart EV Tariff
A time-of-use tariff for electric vehicle owners with a smart meter and home charger. It offers five hours of cheaper off-peak electricity overnight, between midnight and 5am, to make home charging more affordable.

Heat Pump Tariff
Designed for households with an air source heat pump, to help them use energy more efficiently.
Solar Savings Export Tariff
Pays customers with a smart meter and solar panels for the surplus electricity they export back to the grid.

Smart meters are available through Good Energy’s installation partner.

Good Energy and the price cap

One key point to understand is that Good Energy has a permanent exemption from the Ofgem energy price cap. This was granted because of how far it goes in generating and supplying renewable energy.

In practice, it means Good Energy can charge more than the capped unit rate on its variable tariff, provided customers have actively chosen it. It is worth weighing this up against its green credentials when you compare, so you understand exactly what you are paying for.

Is Good Energy right for you?

Good Energy may suit you if genuine green credentials matter more to you than the lowest possible price. Its 100% renewable electricity, carbon-neutral gas, B Corp status and support for customers who generate their own power make it one of the most committed green suppliers in the UK, and its EV, heat pump and solar export tariffs suit low-carbon households well.

The main consideration is cost. Because Good Energy is exempt from the price cap, its rates can be higher than capped suppliers, so it is worth comparing to understand the difference. As always, check the tariff against your usage before you decide.
