E.ON Next is the UK home energy brand of E.ON, a large European energy company headquartered in Essen, Germany. It was launched in 2020, and E.ON moved its existing E.ON and npower household customers across to it. If you were previously an npower or E.ON home customer, your account will have become an E.ON Next account.

E.ON’s history in the UK goes back to its purchase of Powergen in 2002. In 2019 and 2020, E.ON and RWE carried out a major swap of businesses, through which E.ON took on npower, while RWE took over E.ON’s renewable generation arm. E.ON Next was created as the single home energy brand that brought those customers together.

Most of E.ON Next’s electricity comes from renewable sources, and all of the electricity on its fixed tariffs is 100% renewable. Beyond energy supply, it offers solar panels, batteries, heat pumps, boilers, boiler cover and EV chargers, making it a broad option for households looking to invest in low-carbon technology.

It is worth being aware that in 2023, Ofgem fined E.ON Next £5 million over customer service failings during late 2022, when its support could not keep up with demand. Its service ratings have been stronger more recently, as the reviews below show.

E.ON Next tariffs

As one of the UK’s largest suppliers, E.ON Next has one of the widest tariff ranges on the market, covering fixed, variable, tracker, prepayment and specialist deals. Here is a summary of the main tariffs.

Next Flex
The standard variable tariff. Rates move with the Ofgem price cap, with no end date and no exit fees. You will usually be moved onto this tariff when a fixed deal ends.
Next Fixed
Unit rates locked for 12 or 24 months, with 100% renewable electricity. Exit fees apply if you leave early, though you can switch penalty-free in the final 49 days.
Next Pledge
A 12-month tracker tariff where prices follow the market rather than being fixed, with a pledge to stay below the Ofgem price cap.
Next Drive
A specialist electric vehicle tariff with cheaper electricity overnight for charging.
Next Pumped
A specialist tariff designed for homes with a heat pump.
Smart Pay As You Go
A prepayment tariff with no exit fees. Top up online, through the app, or at a Post Office, PayPoint or Payzone outlet.

Economy 7 and time-of-use options are also available, offering cheaper electricity during off-peak hours. If you pay by Direct Debit, you will usually see a reduction in your unit rates and standing charges.

You can apply for a smart meter if you do not already have one, fitted free of charge. E.ON Next customers may also be able to get money off boilers, heat pumps, solar panels, batteries and EV chargers, subject to availability.

What is E.ON Next’s fuel mix?

Any electricity we use is generated from a combination of different fuels, such as nuclear, gas, coal and renewable sources like wind, water and the sun. The proportion of each makes up a supplier’s fuel mix. The majority of E.ON Next’s electricity comes from renewable sources, and all of the electricity on its fixed tariffs is backed by 100% renewable energy.

E.ON Next scores [X out of 5] on Trustpilot, based on [X reviews]. It is active on Trustpilot and regularly responds to reviews, including negative ones.

The independent picture is mixed, which is worth weighing up. Citizens Advice rated E.ON Next 3.71 out of 5 for customer service in its most recent assessment, placing it 3rd among suppliers, with particularly strong marks for its customer commitments and billing. Which? was less positive, scoring it 66% overall, below average, and it is not a Which? Recommended Provider, though it did score well for the help it offers vulnerable customers. Reading recent reviews across more than one source will give you the fullest picture before switching.

“E.ON Next is a solid pick if you want a big, established supplier with a genuinely wide tariff range, and it is one of the better large suppliers for specialist needs like EVs, heat pumps and solar. The service picture is mixed depending on which source you look at, so I would not switch on the brand alone. As with any large supplier, check the price against your own usage first, because the headline tariff is not always the cheapest for your home.”

Is E.ON Next right for you?

E.ON Next may suit you if you want a large, established supplier with one of the widest tariff ranges on the market, and a strong recent customer service record with Citizens Advice. Its fixed tariffs come with 100% renewable electricity, and its specialist tariffs make it a practical choice if you have an electric vehicle, a heat pump, or solar panels and a battery.

On the other hand, Which? customers rated it below average for value for money, and some fixed tariffs carry higher exit fees than others, so it is worth checking the terms before you commit. As always, compare prices using your own postcode and usage before switching.
