About Ecotricity

Ecotricity was founded in 1995 by Dale Vince, who built the company from a single wind turbine and delivered its first green electricity to customers in 1996. It describes itself as Britain’s greenest energy company, and remains owned by its founder.

Ecotricity operates on a not-for-dividend basis, which means it puts the money it makes back into building new sources of green energy. It calls this model Bills into Mills, using customers’ payments to fund new windmills, sun parks and green gas mills across the UK. Most of the electricity it supplies comes from its own generation network, which sets it apart from suppliers that mainly buy their renewable energy from others.

Its gas is carbon-neutralised, meaning the emissions from the gas customers burn are offset through funding schemes such as tree planting. Ecotricity is also developing green gas made from grass at its gas mills, a small but growing share of its supply. It is the only energy company certified as vegan by The Vegan Society, reflecting founder Dale Vince’s wider work, which includes owning Forest Green Rovers, recognised as one of the world’s greenest football clubs.

Smart meters are rolled out free of charge, with one of Ecotricity’s installation partners typically getting in touch within a few weeks of joining.
