Co-op Energy was formed in 2010 as part of the Midcounties Co-operative group, and remains the only co-operative energy supplier in the UK. Midcounties Co-operative members can receive a share of the company’s profits and have a say in the direction of the business.

In August 2019, Co-op Energy entered a partnership with Octopus Energy. Under this arrangement, Octopus provides the actual gas and electricity supply and customer service using its Kraken technology platform, while Co-op Energy continues to design its own tariffs. One result of this partnership is that all of Co-op Energy’s electricity comes from 100% renewable sources, including wind, solar and hydroelectric generation.

Smart meters are available to Co-op Energy customers as part of the national rollout, including smart prepayment meters that let you check your balance and top up online. An in-home display can be installed alongside your meter to show your gas and electricity use in real time.

Co-op Energy tariffs

Co-op Energy offers three main dual fuel tariffs. Prices vary by location, but the structure of each is as follows.

Co-op 12M Fixed
A 12-month fixed price contract. Your unit rates will not rise for the length of the contract, giving you certainty over what you pay.
Co-op Flexible
The standard variable tariff. Unit rates rise and fall in line with wholesale energy prices and the Ofgem price cap. There is no fixed term.
Co-op Community Power
A distinctive tariff powered by green community energy projects across the UK, such as local wind turbines, rooftop solar and hydroelectric schemes. Money spent on the tariff is reinvested into these projects, with generators paid a fair price. On this tariff, the gas you use is also 100% carbon offset.
Co-op Energy does not charge exit fees on any of its tariffs, fixed or variable, so you are free to switch away at any time. Compare energy tariffs now on Simply Switch.

The Octopus Energy partnership

In August 2019, Co-op Energy entered a partnership with Octopus Energy. Under this arrangement, Octopus provides the gas and electricity supply and customer service using its Kraken technology platform, while Co-op Energy continues to design its own tariffs.

This means you get the ethical positioning and co-operative model of Co-op Energy, backed by the operational scale of one of the UK’s largest suppliers. It is also why all of Co-op Energy’s electricity is 100% renewable and why no exit fees apply.
