About SO Energy

SO Energy was founded in 2015 with a focus on supplying renewable energy through a small number of clear, accessible tariffs. In August 2021, it was acquired by ESB Energy, which became a majority shareholder. The two brands subsequently merged under the SO Energy name, taking its customer base to around 310,000 at the time.

SO Energy made headlines in 2023 when it became the first supplier to launch a fixed deal priced below the Ofgem energy price cap since the energy market crisis began in 2021. This was the first opportunity many customers had to make a genuine saving on their energy bills in two years.

SO Energy is signed up to the Energy Switch Guarantee, a set of commitments designed to make switching reliable and hassle-free. The Warm Home Discount is also available to eligible customers. Smart meters are available at no extra cost, and SO Energy offers a mobile app for managing your account, submitting meter readings and downloading bills.

SO Energy keeps its tariff range deliberately simple, offering one of each tariff type to make choosing straightforward. Here is a summary of what is currently available.

SO Energy also participates in the Smart Export Guarantee, which means if you generate your own electricity at home, SO Energy will pay you for any surplus you export back to the grid. Dual fuel accounts are available, allowing you to manage your gas and electricity under a single account with one combined bill.

How green is SO Energy?

All of the electricity supplied by SO Energy comes from 100% renewable sources, backed by Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certificates.

Unusually, SO Energy lets its customers vote each year on which renewable source their electricity should come from, with options including wind, solar, hydroelectric, biomass and tidal. The supplier then sources electricity according to the share of the vote, so customers have a direct say in where their energy comes from.
