EDF was formed in 2003, when the French energy company EDF Group (Électricité de France) brought together Seeboard, London Energy and SWEB Energy under a single UK brand. It has been one of the country’s major suppliers ever since, and is ultimately backed by the French state.
EDF is the UK’s largest producer of low-carbon electricity, generating power from nuclear stations and a portfolio of onshore and offshore wind farms. It was the energy and sustainability partner of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and has set a target of reaching net zero by 2050.
EDF offers a range of tariffs covering standard, smart and prepayment meters. All are available as dual fuel if you want your gas and electricity from the same supplier.
Energy supply is only part of what EDF offers. Its wider range includes boiler cover, home electrics cover and repair, air source heat pump installation, solar panel systems and batteries, insulation, EV charging points and EV leasing. Customers who generate their own electricity can also sell surplus power back to the grid.
EDF runs a Customer Support Fund, which provides grants and support to customers struggling with energy debt, alongside funding to help insulate homes. If you qualify for the Warm Home Discount, you could receive a rebate on your bills. EDF is also part of the Energy Switch Guarantee, which means it takes responsibility for managing your switch, including contacting your old supplier.
Smart meters are available and come with an In-Home Display showing your daily usage and spend. EDF’s app lets you pay bills, submit meter readings, check your balance and track usage, and prepayment customers can top up and set alerts through it.
EDF scores 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot, based on over 238,000 reviews, which places it in the Excellent category. Reviews frequently single out EDF’s app and Home Hub as useful tools for tracking energy use and spend.
It is worth noting that Citizens Advice, which rates suppliers on complaints handling and service, has scored EDF lower, at [2.7 out of 5 — VERIFY] for overall customer service. Looking at both sources will give you a fuller picture.

EDF may suit you if you want a large, well-established supplier with a strong low-carbon generation record and a wide range of home energy products. Its heat pump and EV tariffs are worth a look if you have the relevant technology at home, and the Customer Support Fund is a useful safety net if you are worried about bills.
If price is your main concern, EDF’s rates will not always be the most competitive on the market, so comparing across a range of suppliers is the best way to see where you stand.
