ScottishPower was established in 1990 as part of the privatisation of the Scottish electricity industry and became a private company in 1991. It has been owned by Iberdrola, a Spanish energy company headquartered in Bilbao, since 2006.

ScottishPower is notable for being the first of the UK’s major energy suppliers to generate 100% renewable electricity. It achieved this by selling its gas plants and closing its coal-fired power stations. All of its electricity is now generated through wind farms across the UK, operated by Iberdrola.

It is worth knowing that ScottishPower’s overall fuel mix, which includes supply for non-green tariffs, reflects a broader energy blend. However, the electricity supplied on its green tariffs comes entirely from renewable sources.

ScottishPower energy tariffs

ScottishPower offers several tariff types to suit different households. Here is a summary of what is currently available.

Standard Variable Tariff
The default tariff for most customers. Rates move up and down in line with market conditions. There is no end date and no exit fee, so you can switch at any time.
Cap Tracker Tariff
No fixed end date or exit fees. This tariff tracks the Ofgem energy price cap, so your rates will not exceed the cap and you benefit from any reductions when the cap falls.

Fixed Tariffs
Lock in your unit rates for the length of your contract, protecting you from future price rises. Note that a £50 per fuel exit fee applies if you leave before your contract ends.
Power Saver Tariff
Rewards customers with a communicating smart meter with half-price electricity every weekend between 11am and 4pm. The saving is applied as a credit on your bill.
