While there is no cookie cutter solution for any internet connection problem you may have, there are a few rules of thumb to follow and a few tried and tested ways to solve many common issues.

Consider the Placement of Your Router

Most routers nowadays have pretty decent wireless range, but even the most powerful devices can have difficulties in some properties. With this in mind, you need to consider where the router is placed. For example, if your modem is situated in the living room, but you work in an office upstairs, then it’s likely you will get a worse signal. As such, you should look to place it in or near the room where it will be used the most.

Of course, there are those with larger properties and problematic architecture, which takes us to the next point.

Consider Investing in Signal Boosters

Signal boosters do what they say on the tin. They consist of a small plug-in device that can be wired to your modem or connected wirelessly and offer users a wider range to connect to, making for fewer interruptions as you browse the web.

Does Your Modem Need Upgrading?

When you sign up with a provider, you’ll generally be given a modem that’s more than capable of connecting you to the Internet without an issue. If you’ve had the same connection in place for a while though, your router might be a bit dated.

Modems nowadays deal with more information that in the past, so older models can stutter in comparison. Speak to your provider if you think your router could do with upgrading, or alternatively compare the services available from other providers – you may even end up saving money, as well as being given shiny new equipment.

Is There Any Loose Cabling or Wiring?

Depending on the provider you use, there will be different methods used to connect to the Internet. Some providers may provide an Internet service via the telephone line, whereas others will provide a connection via the use of cable.

If your connection is slow or intermittent, it can be worthwhile checking that all connections are tight on the modem, and that any ASDL filters are used correctly. If you’re having trouble working out exactly how your equipment should be set up, you can speak to your provider who will be able to guide you through some simple checks.

How Many Devices Are You Having Issues With?

In the modern age, it’s normal for us to connect to the Internet on many different devices. These can include tablets, PCs, smartphones and game consoles. If we’re struggling with all devices, then it could be an issue with the router, the modem, or even the actual wiring going into your property. However, if we’re only struggling to connect on one device, then it’s likely that the issue could be with the device. Although each system is different, there are some checks you can make that apply to all.

• Is Wi-Fi Turned On? This seems like an obvious one, but you’d be surprised at how often this is the source of the problem, particularly with mobile phones.
• Could Your Device Have a Virus? Viruses and malware make device act in all sorts of crazy ways. Some are burdened with everlasting pop-ups, whereas others may have trouble using standard features. Run a virus scan to pinpoint any issues. If you’re yet to install antivirus software, then ensure you install one as soon as possible.

Make Sure It’s Not Just the Website

Whereas many of us visit many different websites, there are those of us who may only use one or two websites. It would be easy to assume that the problem lies with the provider, especially if it’s a popular social network we’re using.

Check If There’s an Outage

If we’ve been able to connect to the Internet easily in the past, but suddenly you’re being told there’s no connection, it can be worthwhile checking for outages in your area or with your provider. Of course, you may not always be able to check the website, but many providers often have a recorded message detain such outages along with a time that a fix will be put in place that you can hear by calling them up.

Even if you don’t hear any such message, you can still speak to a representative to ensure that there is no known fault that could be affecting your services.

If All Else Fails…

Of course, there will always be a time when the problem persists, which is when you should reach out to your provider for further assistance, who may send a technician to look into the problem further.
