The results presented are all based on the Which? 2015 Customer Satisfaction Survey. This survey is the biggest survey of its kind and rates 22 different companies with data gathered from over 9000 energy companies.

Here we look at the best energy companies in 2015:
1. Ecotricity
Ecotricity topped the Which? Customer Satisfaction Survey in both 2015 and 2014. In 2015 an incredible 84% of their customers said that they were satisfied with the service that Ecotricity had provided.
They scored 5-star ratings in all of the 5 categories of the survey, apart from value for money in which they scored 4-stars.
On top of this huge level of customer satisfaction, they are also one of the few energy companies in the UK to offer their customers 100% green energy. This means that not only are they great to their customers, they are also great to the environment.

2. Good Energy
Good Energy came a close second in the Which? Customer Satisfaction Survey 2015. Out of the customers surveyed, 82% said that they were happy with the service that they had received from Good Energy.
They scored 5-star ratings in the customer service and helping to save energy categories. Scoring an impressive 4-stars in the remaining 3 categories.
Similarly to Ecotricity they can offer their customer’s the knowledge that all the energy they are receiving is produced from renewable, green energy sources.

3. Ebico
Ebico claimed the bronze medal spot in the Which? Customer Satisfaction Survey 2015. 81% of the customers that were surveyed said that they were happy with the service that Ebico provided.
They scored a 5-star rating in the customer service category and 4-stars in three of the others. Although they did not receive a rating for the complaints handling section of the survey, it is assumed that this is because of a lack of data not a poor score.
Ebico are the only energy company in the UK that are a not-for-profit company. This means that they do not aim to impose high energy prices on their customers for the sake of keeping shareholders happy. Any profit that they do make, they donate directly to The Ebico Trust for Sustainable Development.

Here we look at the worst performing energy companies in 2015:
1. Npower
Npower came last in the Which? Customer Satisfaction Survey 2015. This is the second year in a row that they have held this position. In 2015 only 35% of their customers said that they were happy with Npower’s service. This is however a small improvement on 2014 when they scored 31%.
Npower scored a 1-star rating in 4 out of the 5 categories and a 2-star rating in the Bills (accuracy and clarity) category.
Npower are one of the biggest energy suppliers in the UK. They currently supply electricity and gas to over 3 million people in the UK. They also receive only around 15% of this energy from renewable sources, which is 2.7% lower than the national average.

2. Scottish Power
Scottish Power achieved the second lowest score on the Which? Customer Satisfaction Survey 2015. Out of the Scottish Power customers surveyed only 41% said that they were happy with the service that they had received.
Scottish Power received 2-star ratings in 4 of the categories and a 1-star rating for the Helping to Save Energy category.
Scottish Power, like Npower, are considered to be one of the “big-six” energy companies in the UK. It currently has around 5.6 million customers in the UK. Scottish Power can claim to receive 16.9% of its energy from renewable sources, which is 0.2% above the national average. However around 80% of its energy is still produced from gas and coal.

3. EDF Energy
EDF Energy came third last in the Which? Customer Satisfaction Survey 2015. Out of the customers that were surveyed, only 49% stated that they were happy with the service that they received.
EDF Energy scored 3-star ratings in 4 out of 5 of the categories and they scored 2-stars in the Helping to Save Energy category.
EDF Energy are also one of the “big six” energy companies in the UK. They currently have around 5.7 million customers in the UK. EDF Energy currently source about 13.5% of their energy from renewable methods, this is 3.2% lower than the national average for the UK.
However they are the largest user of nuclear energy in the UK with around 70% of their energy coming from this source. This means that they use a very small amount of carbon-based energy in comparison to the other members of the “Big 6”. Only 0.1% of their energy comes from natural gas and 27.6% from coal.

The “Big 6” are underperforming when it comes to customer satisfaction
One of the main things that we can learn from this survey is that the “big six” energy companies , often do not provide the best service to their customers. In fact, out of the bottom six energy companies in this survey, five of them were members of the big six.
Whilst these companies have performed poorly in this survey it is important to remember that they could still offer you the cheapest deals on gas and electricity.

Small suppliers are doing well for their customers
Many people are fearful of using smaller energy suppliers. One of the reasons given when people are asked why this is, is that they are scared that these energy companies may go out of business and therefore become unable to supply them with electricity.
This is not a concern that you need to have. Ofgem, the regulator for the gas and electricity markets in the UK, have put measures in place that ensure that you will not suffer any power outages if your supplier becomes unable to provide your home with energy.

The greenest energy companies have the highest level of customer satisfaction
The result of this survey show us that there is a correlation between the greenest energy suppliers and the satisfaction levels of their customers.
It would be unwise to assume that this link exists because of where these companies get their energy from. Nonetheless we can safely say that if you are tempted by a company that uses more renewable energy sources, you don’t need to worry about sacrificing customer satisfaction as a result.
