Becoming more energy efficient is easy. It doesn't need to cost a fortune and could save you up to £200 a year on your energy bills.

How much do I need to spend?

Some measures don't cost you anything. Here are 5 simple things you can do today that will help save energy and the environment.

  1. Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows
  2. Turn off your lights when you leave a room
  3. Avoid leaving appliances on standby
  4. Don't fill up the kettle - only boil the amount of water that your really need
  5. Make sure your cylinder thermostat is never above 60°C/140°F

Spend & Save

If you're moving home or re-decorating, consider making your new home more energy efficient, by implementing the following measures:

  1. When buying new electrical appliances, such as washing machines or fridge freezers, look for the distinctive orange and blue Energy Efficiency Recommended logo
  2. Ensure your home is properly insulated - install double glazed windows and eliminate drafts
  3. Buy energy efficient light bulbs - they last up to 12 times longer than their inefficient counterparts and can cut energy wastage by over three quarters
  4. If your boiler is 15 years or older, you should definitely think of replacing it - this could save you over a fifth on your fuel bills
  5. Have solar panels installed on your house. Current U.K. government initiatives pay up to 50 per cent cost of installation
