What rules do doorstep sales people have to follow?

Doorstep sales agents MUST:

  • Clearly show you an ID (identity) badge showing their name, the energy company they represent and a telephone number to ring to verify the ID.
  • Call only between the hours of 9 o'clock in the morning and 8 o'clock in the evening (unless you ask them to call outside these hours).
  • Be sure you are the person responsible for the bills.
  • Be honest about the reason they are calling. They must not mislead you.
  • Leave the premises at any time they are asked.
  • Seek permission from the warden before visiting anyone in sheltered accommodation.
  • Give you truthful information about prices.
  • The sales agent must give you a copy of the signed contract, and information giving:
    • company contact details
    • price information
    • agent's name and ID no
    • a simple explanation of how the contract can be cancelled within 7 days (the 'cooling off' period)
    • and who to contact if you have a complaint
