What should I do if a doorstep sales agent breaks the rules?

If an energy sales person has called at your home and tried to trick you into signing a contract, or has harassed you, they have broken the rules. For more information see  'What rules do doorstep sales people have to follow?'

You should:

  • Contact the company the agent was representing, either by telephone or in writing. Tell them what was wrong and demand an apology.
  • If you felt threatened by the agent, (for example, they would not leave when you asked them to), call the company - or call the Police.

If you are not satisfied by the company's response, contact energywatch for further advice.

Remember:

  • You don't have to talk to sales agents if you don't want to.
  • Don't feel you have to ask a sales agent in to your home.
  • You don't have to let them see your bills.
  • You don't have to let them see your meter.
  • You don't have to sign anything whatsoever - unless you want to agree a new contract.
