What if my bills are still in the name of the previous occupant? You need to tell your supplier when you moved in, and tell them the meter reading from the day you moved in (or as close to it as you get). You are not responsible for the paying the bills of the previous occupant; you only have to pay for the energy you use.
If you have already told the supplier you have moved but they still seem to be sending bills through for the previous occupant, telephone them and ask:
Note: sometimes suppliers will ask for proof to be posted to them of who you are and the date you moved in. Although this can feel heavy-handed and is a nuisance, if you don't send them the information they have asked for, they could carry on sending you bills for the previous occupant. The supplier may also ask you for a forwarding address for the previous occupant.
